Credit & Financial Resources
Poor credit keeps too many people trapped in a cycle they cannot escape — often through no fault of their own. We have gathered vetted, ethical, and free or low-cost resources to help you understand, repair, and build your credit with dignity.
A Word of Caution
Beware of "credit repair" companies that charge upfront fees — it is illegal under federal law (CROA). You can dispute credit report errors yourself for free. The resources below are vetted nonprofit, government, and ethical organizations. Chaplain Rebecca Ministry does not provide credit repair services and receives no compensation from these organizations. This page is offered as free community education only.
How to Take Control of Your Credit
Five simple steps — all free — to start improving your credit today.
Pull your free reports from all three bureaus at AnnualCreditReport.com — not just one. You are entitled to free weekly reports by federal law.
Look for accounts you do not recognize, incorrect balances, late payments that were actually on time, and outdated personal information. Errors are common.
File disputes directly with each bureau reporting the error. The CFPB guides walk you through it. Bureaus must investigate within 30–45 days.
Tools like Experian Boost and credit-builder loans help establish on-time payment history — the single biggest factor in your credit score.
Nonprofit NFCC counselors and Legal Aid offices provide free one-on-one guidance — no sales pressure, no upfront fees.
